'THE VILLAGE OF MCGREGGOR' - Janine Krook Jan 2010 PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 28 January 2011 08:42

Mcgregor_4At the end of the “road to nowhere” in a quiet valley just outside Robertson lies the historic 19th century village of McGregor.  Although located only a 180km from Cape Town, it’s the sense of isolation that adds to McGregor’s charm, with beautifully preserved thatched roof cottages set amongst apricot orchards, vines and olive groves. The typical Little Karoo climate brings hot summer days with clear night skies, and cold winters with occasional snowfall on the surrounding Riviersonderend mountains. The Robertson Valley, also dubbed “the valley of vines and roses”, boasts a number of award winning wineries, and several annual food and wine festivals attracts visitors from across the country. On the last weekend of February the Hands on Harvest Festival (http://www.handsonharvest.com/) offers wine enthusiasts and budding vintners a chance to experience the magic of harvest for a day, and a chance to share a glass of wine with local wine makers.

Other attractions in and around McGregor include the very popular Boesmanskloof Hiking Trail, Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve and the Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary. Follow the McGregor Art Route and visit one or all of the many art galleries and working studios in town. For a more laidback option indulge in a weekend retreat and holistic healing therapies and massages to energize and stimulate body, mind and soul.

Accommodation – 46 Voortrekker Cottage

Located in the centre of town, the thatched-roof cottage with its white-washed walls dates back to 1871. The spacious self-catering house is ideal for families or a group of friends. The main bedroom has a king size bed and en-suite bathroom with shower and victorian bath. A small nursery off the main room with bunk beds is ideal for parents with young kids. A second spacious bedroom can be made up as a king or twin room, with en-suite bathroom with shower. A small third bedroom with separate bathroom with victorian bath and shower is ideal for kids or teenagers.

The farmstyle kitchen is fully equipped and the cosy dining room with open fire place is the perfect place to spend cold winter evenings. In summer months the undercover “stoep” overlooking the back garden and pool provides a cool haven from the midday heat.

Daily rate – R1200 for the house which includes linen and towels.
