'WEEKEND IN THE WINE REGION' - Debbie Blake (August 2011) PDF Print E-mail

Cathbert_1What a wonderful treat is was to spend a weekend away at Cathbert Country Inn situated near Franschhoek in the beautiful Cape Winelands. It is the perfect getaway if you want some quiet time and lots of relaxation. After planning a wedding, relocating to Cape Town and expecting a baby all in the same year we thought we needed some time away from our busy life to spend some quality time together before all the hard work really begins!

Cathbert Country Inn is a beautiful retreat situated just outside Franschhoek and is perched high up on the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountains with stunning views across the vineyards to the Boland Mountains. We stayed in a luxury 2 bedroom cottage fully self catering with our own private splash pool and secluded garden which was located across the bridge further apart from the rest of the lodge, giving us complete privacy and the most spectacular view overlooking the winelands below.

We checked in and then ventured off to Franschhoek town to do our food shopping for the weekend so we could eat all our meals at the cottage without having to leave our pretty spot. In the afternoon we took a leisurely stroll down to the small dam to watch the horses grazing merrily over the neighbouring fence and we watched as the snow capped mountains in the distance slowly melted in the warm winter sun. We  spent the rest of the day reading and simply relaxing around the pool absorbing the quiet and peaceful surroundings in which we stayed – nothing better when you are 8 months pregnant and don't have allot of energy to go exploring all the sites!

On Sunday we woke up late to the sounds of the birds and animals around. The weather was perfect and we cooked up a hearty breakfast and then decided to get some more sun and relaxation around our private little pool. In the afternoon we went for a complimentary wine tasting at the nearby Vrede & Lust Wine Estate before taking a slow leisurely drive through the winelands back home.
